Social Software and its Role in Product Promotion

This is a Blog that I am operating for a grade! That's right, this is a school project! The class: Audience Research, the goal: To determine what people think about SOCIAL SOFTWARE (ie: MYSPACE, Facebook, etc), and how effective it is for marketing products!

BANDS AND MUSIC

Aside from simple advertising on social sites, many people make accounts to promote their bands and radio stations.

Here is a list of the bands that I have personally friended on myspace:
http://www.myspace.com/thebronx
http://www.myspace.com/savestheday
http://www.myspace.com/kervin
http://www.myspace.com/deccatree
http://www.myspace.com/halfbaked
http://www.myspace.com/insecthobby
http://www.myspace.com/anotherdaylate
http://www.myspace.com/crashingdownnj
http://www.myspace.com/skylinenj
http://www.myspace.com/silentwitnessnj

Each of these bands has music that plays as soon as their page loads. There is a picture of the album cover, and an option to play different songs by the band. Music has become so popular on Myspace, that Tom, the creator of Myspace has created a record lable, known as Myspace records. On this profile, there are advertisements for bands that are signed to the label, or can be found on the compellation cd.

THIS IS DEFINATELY ADVERTISING!

They also sell t-shirts, and, of course, the Myspace compellation album!

As for the bands…

People can add any band as a friend (as I have done). This helps to promote music. By adding bands to the friend list, the artists receive free promotion. Opinion leaders in the music world (friends of Myspace users that know the best music), help facilitate this promotion when their friends view their profiles.

QUESTION:

Clearly it is a good idea for bands to advertise using social software. Would you add a band to your friend list?

IF you heard a band that you enjoy on myspace, would you purchase their album?

HOW do you feel about playing music on myspace profiles?
Would you/do you have a song that plays when your myspace profile loads?

Does it bother you when people have too many effects on their user profiles? (page takes too long to load)

I thought that it was a great idea for bands to be on myspace - i can listen to my friends' bands and music at different schools since i can't see them live. Colin has his own myspace music site - www.myspace.com/laurenhilllovesme
(check out "Tom's Song")
And having bands i actually like as friends, im up on all their shows and appearances which is awesome. HOWEVER, right now i have 5 bands i don't know/have never heard of asking to be my friend, because of my location and thats kind of obnoxious. One white rapper, some hippie earth band... I actually listened to the bands when they first started randomly friending- i would check out their pages to see if they were any good, but with like 10 + bands a week friending me, i dont even bother anymore. Back off, you crazy friending myspace-bands. BACK OFF. I saw an article about a myspace program that will randomly seek out and friend 500 people at a time.. maybe they are using this?

tom even offered more pictures on your site for every person who bought the cd lol... that was pretty crazy...

i only have a couple bands on my friends list... just my favs. if i heard something on myspace that i was willing to spend money on i would definitely get the cd.

if a band adds me to their friend list i always go to their page and see if they are any good... but out of all the bands that have added me i think i have only accepted once lol

i always have a song on my page, i think it adds a little something about your personality when u have your current favorite song up there.

it does bother me when people have too much crap on their page... can't they see that u can't even read it anymore?? yeah... maybe it's just because i'm learning about web design and user interfaces in my classes but it definitely pisses me off when their page is too over the top :)
